Giving USA is the most comprehensive compendium anywhere on US philanthropy. It is published annually by Giving USA Foundation, of which Hank Goldstein is immediate past chairman. Data for the 2006 calendar year will be available mid-June. It is intended for CEOs of nonprofits, other professionals, lay leaders, especially governing boards, state and federal legislators and executives, students of nonprofit management - and finally the interested general reader.

Giving USA measures data on a national - not regional basis - however there are certain key truths that apply to the east and west coast markets Oram primarily serves:

  • The bulk of giving is from individuals.
  • Gifts from estates have been increasing.
  • The large staffed foundations and corporations combined account for only 12% or so of giving.
  • Government money is generally not included.
  • Religious organizations do not have to file tax returns so most giving shown under religion is probably under-reported.

For national and regional Oram clients, Giving USA is a useful comparative tool. How do you compare with the national statistical model? Where do you vary? Should you be more - or less – like the national model? For more information, please contact Hank or Marilyn.
